Geoff, this is such an excellent summary of empathy and the discussions around it. We are doing some in-depth research and work around empathy, through the lens of empathic intelligence, which is basically what you summarized in this. We are in our Fellowship Program, in a similar way to you, taking an understanding of empathic intelligence and working Christian leaders through an intentional spiritual formation process to help them develop the tools and understanding necessary to live with this type of empathic wisdom. Excellent summation and good recommendations.

Excellent. I love to see the crossover. What books or thinkers are you working with for developing empathic intelligence? And have you mapped out the spiritual formation process to develop empathy?

I am currently translating the empathic intelligence development process Ideos developed before my arrival which was based more in neuroscience, peace-making, and dialogue, into a spiritual formation and missional development process. In many ways it essential to a contextual theological method, so I am connecting with some work there as well.

We are reading a lot of the same folks in the spiritual formation world psychology, and neuroscience worlds, as you regularly reference and interact with. I will go back and see if there are particular foundational texts that might be outside of what I have seen you interact with. Love to have a chat about it all some time.

Appreciate this a lot- definitely would love a podcast episode on the rhythms of rupture and repair! Thanks for referencing the book until then!

I am a Counselor Educator and did a dissertation on the most influential dimensions of influence in fostering changes. Genuine concern, Respect, Empathy that does not become enmeshed in the feelings of others the point of codependency are basic. These are critical for Christians in leadership and pastoral care/counseling. Empathy is generally misunderstood by mast people.

I developed a process for equipping Christians to build healthy relationships as one step in releasing the fruit of the Spirit. I have written several books on ways to Disciple Christians and trained leaders in many nations.

Theologically I see 4 main issues underlying how we can build more healthy, mature Christian’s followers as related to the Great Commission, the Great Commandment, and Eph 4:11- They are Truth, Fruit, Gifts, and Power. All 4 come from the Holy Spirit.

It seems that most care, counseling, and mentoring approach scripture as a cook book that offers a verse for each problem. I see scripture as providing a comprehensive set of principles that lead us to help troubled people apply with hours of practice all 4 areas in our lives.

I also urge churches to equip every member to advance in faith, hope, and love so “The body builds itself up in love.” Gary Sweeten
