3 Times When More Head Knowledge Actually Helps
Especially when we are living in the Jungle.

We often hear that we need more HEART knowledge and less HEAD knowledge.
We hear that HEAD knowledge isn’t enough.
We NEED to know in our hearts!
But what if that’s not always true?
Often what a broken heart needs is more head knowledge: knowledge about what is true; who is actually reliable; that they really do have agency; that it in fact happened.
3 Times Head Knowledge Is Important
#1: We Feel Out of Control
When our hearts (and probably our bodies) are in chaos, our heads can remind us of concrete steps to re-regulate our emotions. And our heads can look at the events to discern what caused the loss of control and seek to remedy it in the present and protect against it in the future.
#2: We Don’t Know Who To Trust (or we keep trusting the wrong people)
Our heads can look beyond nice words and nice feelings that people might produce in us to their actual actions. Our heads help us remember who keeps their word, who actually shows us, who really does help, and who doesn't. Our heads are better at looking at these long-term patterns.
#3 We Feel Lost In It All
Our heads can help calm the storm by putting things into linear or logical categories, forcing our flowing and semi-chaotic hearts to slow down, to reflect, and to notice. Putting a label on our experiences doesn’t put us in a box, but helps us move forward. This is the "name it and tame it" approach.
And this is as true for our spirituality as it is for the rest of life.
"The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." (Rom. 8:6).
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Rom. 12:2).
